From the router one cable goes into the modem. When the router has no switch functionality then you must attach all the Ethernet cables from the PCs into a switch in order to make the PCs reachable for each other. The switch is connected to the router (with an Ethernet cable). The router distributes the internet traffic from and to the right computer in your home. From all PCs an Ethernet cable goes into a router. From the router one cable goes into the modem.
